MLED Project helps Dnipropetrovsk oblast develop the Region’s Environmental Safety Program

On September 10, a meeting of the Working Group on Development the Comprehensive Regional Environmental Safety and Climate Protection Program of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast for 2016–2025 was held in Dnipropetrovsk. The meeting was followed by a press conference with participation of Yevhen Udod, head of Dnipropetrovsk Oblast Council, Oksana Aliyeva, MLED Project environment consultant, and Doug Hickman, a Canadian expert.
The central goal of the Program is to develop environmentally safe and comfortable living conditions for Dnipropetrovsk Oblast citizens by reducing anthropogenic load and restoring the environment by implementation of innovative production technologies, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and increasing the environmental culture and awareness of the public.

At the press conference, the speakers reported on the progress in the development of the Program, the main provisions of which were presented at the working group meeting. The MLED Project environmental experts taking part in the development of the new program mentioned that they rely on modern approaches and successful practices of environment protection planning implemented in Canada. Moreover, the proposals of the region’s main polluting enterprises regarding the plan for implementation of an environmental program in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast have already been collected. Besides, a discussion platform, the City Environmental Platform, was created, becoming an effective mechanism to share ideas, discuss potential projects, and develop new practices in the environmental safety sector. The oblast community and the ecology specialists have the opportunity to propose their initiatives and ideas, competent opinions, and analysis of the problems, while the government agencies can provide the organizational foundations for implementation of such ideas and projects.

"The energy and environmental security of the regions, health and welfare of the Dnipropetrovsk region residents depend on how quickly we implement the advanced climate protection, energy efficiency, energy management, and alternative energy technologies and develop action plans for sustainable energy development of each city. Today our region achieved systemic positive progress in this area", said Yevhen Udod.

According to the preliminary information, the Program will become effective in 2015, and will be implemented from 2016 to 2020.
